AirAsia: Agrees With Airbus To Defer Delivery Of 7 A320 Planes

AirAsia Bhd. (5099.KU) Wednesday said it had struck an agreement with Airbus to delay delivery of seven A320 planes to 2015 from the originally scheduled 2011 because of infrastructure constraints at the airline’s hub in Kuala Lumpur.

The deferral of the 180-seater narrow body planes wouldn’t entail any penalties to be paid by AirAsia, Asia’s largest low-cost carrier by fleet size said in an exchange filing.

“The present infrastructure at the (airline’s current Kuala Lumpur hub) is not able to accommodate AirAsia’s fleet expansion in the number of aircraft originally scheduled to be delivered in 2010 and 2011,” the airline said.

AirAsia last year blamed airport infrastructure constraints for a four-year deferral in the delivery of eight A320 aircraft scheduled for this year and another eight in 2011.

“The rationale to further scale down on the delivery of aircraft in 2011 is to enable AirAsia to optimize its fleet and avoid the costs associated with leaving idle or underutilized aircraft due to infrastructural limitations,” it said.
