RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – Saudi authorities say landing gear on a Lufthansa cargo plane broke upon hitting the tarmac in Riyadh, causing the plane to split in half and catch on fire in an accident earlier this week.

The Civil Aviation Authority announced results of an investigation Saturday.

The German pilot and co-pilot were injured in Tuesday’s accident and had to leave the plane by emergency chutes.

Lufthansa’s cargo division in Germany said there was about 90 tons of unspecified cargo on the flight from Frankfurt. It had been scheduled to continue on to the nearby United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong.

The MD-11 was built in 1993 and acquired by the German airline in 2004. Lufthansa said its last complete technical checkup was in June 2009.
